Lake Kariba Dam Wall
The lake bed was formed from decomposing inundated vegetation, which filled it with nutrient-rich water during its filling-up phase, resulting in a thick layer of fertile soil on the land. The Kariba Gorge was dammed to create a reservoir, which is located 250 miles (400 km) downstream of Victoria Falls. The Dam, located at the northeastern end of the Zambezi River, was completed between 1958 and 1963, causing the flooding of the Gorge and resulting in the formation of the lake. The name of the place refers to where water has been trapped. When the dam was built over a period of five years, the Batonka people and animals living in the area that was going to be flooded had to be relocated. It is a popular destination that offers breathtaking sunsets, abundant animals along its shores, and great opportunities for fishing.
