Our bush camps stand out, with our photographic hides being developed by National Geographic, BBC, and Discovery Channel for various shoots and wildlife documentaries. Beyond photographers and filmmakers, they offer an incredible wildlife experience for enthusiasts. Guests can observe animals up close in their natural habitat undisturbed. We provide specialized equipment for photographers, including bean bags, dust covers, and charging facilities. Derek's unique photographic hides are a defining feature of Shenton Safaris, ensuring a safe and close-up wildlife photography experience. Also Shenton Safaris' Carmine Bee-eater Hide is a unique tourism spot, featuring a boat stationed by the riverbanks where these colorful birds nest.
Accessed from Kaingo and Mwamba, our Carmine Bee-eater Hide is connected when the Southern carmine bee-eaters nest in the South Luangwa area. This animals' migration timing varies yearly, typically in August, so we guarantee the hide's availability in September and October.
The types of hide's location changes annually, sometimes on a boat near the river bank or on a sandbank close to the colony. The route may vary too, so be prepared to cross a shallow river portion barefoot to reach the hide! Guests are transported to the spot with an armed scout. After a walk across a long beach to the river's edge, we wade through the water to the hide anchored on a boat in front of the colony. Guests find the journey exciting, with Carmines unfazed by our presence, providing great photo ops. Ideal for bird enthusiasts of all levels.
Tucked at the confluence of the Luangwa and Mwamba rivers, Kaingo camp's Hippo Hide offers an exclusive peek into the world of hippos. Carved discreetly into the riverbank, it provides comfortable seating and camera props for guests to observe the captivating antics of these magnificent creatures up close. The hide evolves as the safari season unfolds, offering ever closer encounters with the river's iconic residents.
NSEFU Camp's Nsefu Hide offers an intimate wildlife viewing experience along the serene Luangwa River. Concealed along the riverbank, guests can observe the fascinating interactions between predators and prey in the heart of Zambia's wilderness, promising unforgettable moments in nature.
Exclusive to Mwamba’s guests, this hide directly overlooks an active waterhole. It's most stunning from late August when other water sources dry up. The waterhole offers fantastic game-watching opportunities. The scene is constant, but the cast changes throughout the day. Guests often spend hours here captivated by the ever-changing show. In September and October, many choose to spend the entire day at the Last Waterhole Hide, skipping other activities. Just a short walk from Mwamba's main area, the hide is within walking distance of all thatch chalets. Guests have free access and can pop in during the day. A highlight is the mornings from 8 to 9 am.
Overlooking the Luangwa River is a raised treehouse-like platform above a historical elephant crossing. Elephants have frequented this spot for decades. During low river levels, you can witness the gentle giants gathering at the waterfront, drinking, and crossing. Sometimes, a young elephant opts to play in the river instead of crossing promptly.
The Elephant Hide could be your fourth activity, as elephants may cross during brunch! If you spot them nearing the crossing point, the guide will inquire if you'd like to momentarily pause brunch to observe from the Elephant Hide.
Accessed from both Kaingo and Mwamba, the Wild Dog Lagoon Hide edges the Wild Dog Lagoon. This area offers great Wild Dog sightings, but it's better known for exceptional bird watching and plains game. The lagoon attracts northern plains game like Elephants, Cookson’s Wildebeest, Eland, and Buffalo for drinking. Waterbirds dominate, ranging from the African Jacana to the Sacred Ibis.
